Until our history books are rewritten to include Herstory, (Women that fought along side our Forefathers to create America) and include the accomplishments of American women we cannot call America the land of the free. The contributions of American women continue to go unrecognized and women's herstory is rarely offered as regular Curriculum in our school systems. The contributions of American women are endless.
The health and economics of any society is based on the health and education of the women within that society. American women are left far behind many of their European, African and Asian counterparts in the field of political empowerment and rank 66th in the world. Wisconsin ranks a C- for women's health and economics, according to 2006 Center for Disease Control Report. Although many women have run for a seat, there has not been a woman on The Milwaukee Common Council in 50 years. Wisconsin women make 11% below the national average in "pay equity" which means women in Wisconsin make .68 for every dollar a man earns in the workforce across every occupation. We got a long way to go baby!
CitiGal steps into the shoes of our Foremothers to continue to fight for women's equality. There is not a day that goes by without gratitude in my for Americans that fought to free women from slavery and those that continue to work for women's equality. CitiGal is a grave reminder to all society that the struggle for women's equality is not over. In fact, the struggle has only just begun.
Society is indebted to the accomplishments of the fearless women who dared to step forward and right societies wrongs. Today's women's movement has changed. The new women's movement is teaching women that in order to gain equality women must be accountable toward one another and responsible for one another's success.
CitiGal's American Women's Movement section is designed; as an educational tool, to highlight American women's contributions, to pay homage to our fearless Foremothers and women innovators. CitiGal will frequently change the photographs and continue to highlight historical and present women leaders.
